Sunshine and great going ushered in the spring hunter trials sponsored by Dunton Green based Allways Couriers. Course builders, George Comer, ably assisted by Ian Richardson and Steve Seldon renovated several jumps and built a new corner complex which challenged Open competitors. All classes offered the chance for the two highest placed British Horse Society Gold members to go to the BHS Cross-Country Championships to be held this autumn in Derbyshire. Riders came from as far afield as Ashford and Canterbury in Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex in the hope of qualifying. It was not a wasted journey for Melissa Clifton from Benfleet in Essex. She qualified for both the Novice and Open Championships on Pussy Galore. Winner of Novice, section 2, she was highest placed BHS member over both Novice sections and second highest placed BHS member in the Open class. Sevenoaks R C members were not to be out done. Eryl Jures on Dancing Ledge, thirteen year old Alice Burgess, on African Magic, and sixteen year old Laura Reeves on Hedera Hat took the top three places in the Open, with Laura as highest placed BHS member. Sara Roberts and Harry took the top slot in Novice, section 1, with Claire Gaylor and Liverpule, a newcomer to cross-counrty, second. Jemma Clark on Trelawney Lad was second in Novice, section 2, and second highest placed BHS member over both Novice sections. Although Jemma was also part of the winning pair, her partner, Cherry Brannan, who rode VRB Lady, was not a BHS member, so the qualification went to Bradbourne Riding Clubs regular team members, second placed Lynn Bright on Max and Carole Cook with Budding Annie. The other Pairs BHS qualification went to twelve year old Luke Scott on Eriksbyns Bastian and eleven year old Joanna Crouch with Bobs a Builder who were placed third. Last year Ashford based Joanna and sister Jennifer were fourth in the Championship, so the new partnership are determined to do as well or better this year. It seems we have quite a following in Ashford as a cross-country venue worth the journey. Organisers, Isobel Standen and June Burgess, thank everyone who helped in the preparation and on the day.
