Horse Trials, Lodge Farm

19th August 2007

Emma in the water!

Our One Day Event was relocated to Lodge Farm in Matfield from its usual venue, Higham Farm at Bells Yew Green, due to the outbreaks of Foot and Mouth in Surrey. This was a great relief to the organisers and we are extremely grateful to the Hughes for all the help they gave us in getting ready for a major event at a week’s notice.

This year it would have been too much to hope for an entirely dry day but it could have been much worse. Although we felt sorry for the Intermediates who had the worst of the weather in dressage and show jumping, it did dry up for the cross-country sections.

As usual, SRC members were heavily outnumbered by visitors but were well represented in the placings. Juniors had splendid results, with Nicola Bunch winning Novice section D, Emma Howard winning Intermediate section B and Alice Burgess, second in Intermediate section A.

Chloe Allistone was second in Novice D and Claudia Graham, who was fourth, was still grinning from ear to ear next day when helping clear up.

Lara Reddy achieved “Best Dressage” in Intermediate section B and Sally Pugmire was third and Claudia Graham fourth in their Novice sections. Claudia was still elated when she helped pack up next day.

The Sheila Cotter Trophy for best SRC performance in the Open went to second placed Sonia Theobald. Sara Roberts came fourth and Sue French, fifth.

Around sixty members and friends helped to make this event such a success, with their hard work, both before, after and on the day. We can’t name you all  but this extract from an e-mail sent to the club’s website is addressed to you –– “Just wanted to say a big thank you to all involved in making the Horse Trials on Sunday such a fun day, despite the awful weather.  We were competing in the Intermediate class and have to say it was extremely efficiently run and the stewards were all very friendly and amazingly cheerful, when they must have been as fed up as us, if not more, with the constant rain! ……We do appreciate just how much hard work must go into putting together such an event, especially with the change of venue involved – what a great place Lodge Farm is!”
