Dressage, Show Jumping & Combined Training

Redlands, 13th May

Sponsored by Udimore Farm Tack Store

All right, I might have overdone the prayers for rain softened ground – but the persistent, downpours, mist and even a thunderstorm didn’t dampen the pleasure of those winning rosettes sponsored by Udimore Farm, the recently opened tack shop on the A25 at Ightham.

Jane Lockwood won Prelim 7 with the impressive chestnut, Double Decker, and came second in Prelim 12, which was won by Lara Reddy and her young horse, Golly Gosh.

Judge Donna Johnson praised the quality of riding in the Novice and Elementary classes. Jo Donaldson, riding Ryan, won Novice 24, and came second in Elementary 41.

Lorna Davis, riding her first Elementary test, was the winner on Ellie Hughes’ Holly. Also known as Maybe A Cracker, the Welton Crackerjack bred mare had a successful eventing career with Ellie and before her, Eliza Dunn, before retirement and motherhood. Now she is just going out “to have some fun.”

There was a tie for first place in the Preliminary Combined Training between Emma Galpin on Darwin and Claire Turley riding Fuschia, with 67.5% dressage and clear show jumping rounds.

Sam Paxton, who earlier in the day had judged the Walk & Trot test won by Mandy Avery and Billy Wizz, was the winner of the Novice Combined Training on her dressage score with Master Rupert. Vicki Lawrence, recovered from the fall at the Indoor Novice Shoe Jumping Championships which left her needing over twenty stitches inside her mouth, was second.

Katherine Stell had a successful day with her new pony, Just Jordan, winning the Very Novice Jumping, coming second in the Pairs class with mother, Mandy, riding Fraggle Rock, and second in the Intermediate Jumping, her highest class so far.

Alice Burgess won Intermediate Jumping with Jack and Pairs riding Ludo. A notice that Alice “was looking for a Pair” brought the puzzled comment “A pair of what?” from one vititor to secretary’s tent!  Her eventual partner, Charlotte Kent riding Starlight Express, was also second to Vicki Schreiber on Christa with the only two double clears in Novice Jumping. Open Jumping was abandoned due to squelching ground and heavy mist!

Jacob Burgess & El Casaurino Sharon Swain & Eau de Noir

Our thanks go to dressage judges, Sam Paxton, Marion Bush, David Rumsey and Donna Johnson, and to everyone who helped on the day, many of whom spent several hours being soaked! Thanks also to Sara Roberts who barely had time to draw breath from the Hunter Trial before organising this show.
