REPORT

Area Show Horse Trials, Borde Hill

13th June 2010

There was hot competition at Redlands at Sevenoaks Riding Club’s June show, and that wasn’t just caused by the thermometer touching thirty degrees. Janice Payne thanks all those who braved the heat to help her run the show. Some fast double clear rounds at 2ft 3in in Very Novice Jumping saw Katherine Stell (Shabraks Gem of Colebank) go ahead of Penny Austin (Lily), closely followed by Josh Toby (Coal) and Charlie Poole (Ruby). Friendly rivals Cathy Tapp (Schroeder) and Lindsey Mitchell (Shaken But Not Stirred) repeated last month’s show jumping successes, with a win each.

Twelve year-old Rebecca Miles (Snoopy) was making herself useful as arena party when it was pointed out that she was in the lead in the dressage section of Preliminary Combined Training. She hastily tacked-up for the 2ft 6in scurry, which she won, confirming her top slot. Vicky Grimshaw, who recently lost her Friesian mare to Grass Sickness, formed a new partnership with June Burgess’s African Magic to win the 2ft 9in scurry and take second place in Novice Combined Training. That class was won by Charlotte Payne (Mystique Bay), who also produced a clear round in the Scurry and another, unopposed, to win the 3ft Open jumping class.

Heather Ansell (Stanhopes Mr Blue Sky) was the delighted winner of Walk and Trot Dressage. Two eight year olds, Emily Letham (Coringwould Windflower) and Daisy Foyle (Freddie ), showed great promise by coming third and fourth. The large Preliminary 10 Dressage class was won by Jan Knights (Bonney Bere) and Preliminary 14 by Vicky Bishop (Sulaman). Voirrey Mitchell (Popeye) took the lead in the HN1 test.

Although the early dressage classes were large the later classes were very small. One reason was that Maureen McDonnell withdrew all three of her horses so that she could come to our aid when two dressage judges were unable to attend. Maureen judged Walk and Trot and scored for the rest of the day. Juli Southby judged the  very large Prelim 10 class. Our only remaining judge of the three originally booked, Carol Stothard, judged all the other classes in brisk succession. The small Novice and Elementary classes were combined. Percentage scores left Briony Bunch (Highjinx Jack) in the unusual position of being both first and second on the same horse, having ridden both tests.
