Sevenoaks Riding Club hold open show

Successful event in Knole Park

The outstanding feature of the annual show held at Duke’s Meadow, Knole Park, on Saturday, was that the organisers ran to the timetable from start to finish – a commendable achievement.

This was the first open show held by the Riding Club and it was staged as a revival of the Sevenoaks Horse Show which was a feature of Sevenoaks life before the war.  As a result of Saturday’s event the show will be repeated annually.

Lord Sackville’s generosity in allowing the use of Duke’s Meadow, has given the show one of the loveliest settings imaginable and the spectators on Saturday were treated to a show worthy of its surroundings.

         YOUNG RIDER’S SUCCESS

Miss Leonie Harris, who recently scored a string of successes at the Knockholt gymkhana, did extremely well to tie for third place in the open jumping.

This was Miss Harris’s first venture in open jumping classes.  She is only 15 years old and she was competing against experienced riders on a course of 10 jumps, including a double, laid out by Captain Peter Wolfe-Taylor.

Young Joe Stuart-Smith also followed up his successes at Knockholt by carrying off the open juvenile jumping.  In this class there were two jump-offs before the leading places could be decided, but the second jump-off, after the jumps had been raised, proved decisive, for Master Stuart-Smith got the only clear round on this occasion.

There was an excellent “activity ride” given by members of the West Kent Hunt branch of the Pony Club.  This event was organised by District Commissioner Mrs. Charrington, and proved as fascinating as ever in the precision and unison of both riders and their mounts; the perfection of their drill would have done credit to a cavalry regiment.

There was a parade of the West Kent Foxhounds which excited much interest but the piece de resistance was the children’s fancy dress, which attracted 34 entries.

This event was won by Sean and Sally Wellbrand on Sarahas circus bareback riders.  In second place was Winifred Bennett, a young Ross House entry, on Tim.

DOUBLE SUCCESS

Mrs. Peter Caslon’s entry Friar’s Charm won the lightweight hunter class from Mrs. Fane Gladwin’s Scamp and Miss Ann Dowley’s Free and Easy, a recent Dublin winner, was placed third, while Merry Boy, owned by the White City International Show, and Edenbridge Show winner Major Worthington gained the reserve rosette.

Mrs. Caslon followed up her success in the lightweight class by winning the heavyweight hunter class with Moonstone, with Mr. Haldin’s Baritone, ridden by Mr. Sam Marsh, second.   Mr Masters’ Bambridge gained third place.

There was an interesting innovation in the local handicap timed touch and out jumping, the fences being raised according to a horse’s winnings.  This event was finally won by Miss Ann Hewitt on Improver with the Hon. Mrs Money-Coutts on Russet in second place.

Judges were Mr. W. B. Rodgers, Mr. I. R. M. Haley, Major R. E. Field Marsham, Mr. C. W. Hickman, Mrs. A. E. Piper, Lt-Colonel J. E. Hance, Miss M Burgess, Mrs. J. Tilling, Mrs. W. H. Ballantyne, Mrs. E. Carter Brain, Mr. J. R. N. Waters, Mr. A. V. Epps, Mr. H. Buckland, Mrs. I. R. M. Haley.
